CHAMPAGNE SUPERNOVA IN THE SKY
Monday, October 30

These are the 6 contestants for Miss Tibet 2006,
and the winner is Tsering Chungtak,
second row, 1st from the left.

it started out with the stupidchina boy making a joke about Contestant No. 2 being a military personnel, and how she can easily kill those people who disqualified her. then we laughed about how these contestants look, criticised them, and scorned them for their physical appearance.

suddenly, i realised how shallow and superficial we are. we judged them according to their outward appearances according to our perceptions of beauty. the proliferation of the media has defined Beauty in their own sense (Note: models who's BMI is 14 is acceptable for the runway) and subtly, we as consumers have adopted that as our own personal definition of beauty too. the media has manipulated our way of thinking and we accept it without fighting back. okay, maybe Dove has by starting the Big is Beautiful compaign, but seriously, i deem it as pure advertising gimmick.

i thought about how our society has an immense impact on the way we think & how we are just products of society. the manipulations that lead to the absence of individualism. it's hard to characterise Individualism nowadays because how real can a person get? we are inevitably a walking advertisement of the society we are in, our thinkings are shaped by what society propels us to believe in & our beliefs are merely induced by circumstances. Guys can only have short hair, Girls have long hair. Guys wear pants, Girls wear skirts. whoever said that?! because society have deemed that as acceptable, we adhere to it without retailation. we're just like a piece of clay, being moulded by society into who we will eventually become. such Dehumanisation.

Cultures influences the notion of Beauty. what is considered Beautiful is objectionable, aka Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. i once watched a National Geographic programme which set the standards for beauty in the different cultures. for the Karen people living along the Thai-Burma border, long necks being stretched by brass is considered beautiful & in olden times, women's feet are bounded cus the more petite they are, the beautiful they are. what if your idea of beauty clashes with what society deems as acceptable beauty? the misfit of a society might be the Beauty King/Queen in another. for example, a heavily tattoo clad person might be considered a rebel in one community but a cool person in another. so, are you beautiful, or are you not?

so who's to define Beauty? whatever happened to Natural Beauty? the profileration of plastic surgery, the increase in beauty centres, the flourishing beauty industry, the many slimming advertisements. Such, and Natural Beauty are inversely proportional to each other. so what's beauty to you? and the way consumers are so, consumed (forgive me for the pun) by such hedonistic lifestyle and the way they rank asthetic beauty alongside to their Gods shows how influential the media is. once, only people who were inclined towards making themselves look better had to buy certain magazines such as Cleo to satify their desires. but now, look! there's Urban, an insert that comes with the papers every Thursday free of charge with newspaper subscription.

(which i religiously read)

Yes, i'm a walking android of society.
